ELTAX STUDIO PRO 350

Retail at £200, paid £89.95 at Richersounds

These 250W babies have more kick than a mule! For me, I have to have bass cones of 25cm and horn tweeters. It's the sound I've got used to. Horn tweeters project guitar from Pink Floyd's Pulse Live album around the room majestically. Bass has to be deep and rumbly. Some may think this type of speaker doesn't go with a home cinema system. Perhaps they don't, but don't forget that stereo sound is my first point of call. They don't actually cause me any problem when the digital gets going.

SONY SS-CR490
Center and Rears

Retail at £139.95, paid £29.99 at Richer Sounds

These are the top end of Sony's Centre and Rear package. I originally had the 190's and find the tweeters on these a bit sharper. I may in time change the centre, as in Prologic it sounds a bit boxy. They work well with surround and as my receiver is 100W their minimum 120W makes them an ideal fit. I've set the receiver to 'small' for these, as they cannot adequately produce bass.

Specifications
Two-way center speaker with dual 5" H.O.P. woofers and 1" ferro-fluid dome tweeter, center speaker power handling 150w maximum, two-way surround speakers with 5" H.O.P. woofers and 1" dome tweeters, surround speaker power handling 120w maximum, magnetically shielded center speaker.
Highly Oriented Polyolefine (HOP) woofer cones resist distortion
Ferro-fluid cooled tweeter voice coils enhance power handling
Detachable grilles on all three speakers

ELTAX ATOMIC 10.2R SUBWOOFER (Beech)

Retails at £200, paid £118.53 at Quality Electrical Direct

This 175W subwoofer with a 25cm bass cone working alongside the 250W front speakers hardly needs to be turned up. The remote comes in handy for easy fine-tuning for various modes. I wouldn't have got a sub but because of the Technics Receiver I needed more bass for surround. How do you describe the sound on a subwoofer? Well erm, bassey! Pay for the neighbours to go on holiday and crank it up and let the floor rumble!
